My Mother Parts 1 &2,
(a piece I wrote a while back)

Pt. 1
my mom used to smoke pot.
i think about her--
with her long, flipped out, farrah fawcett hair.
her tan skin,
because her dad built pools.
i wonder how she laughed,
if its at all like she laughs now:
eyes shut, full smile making her
nose crinkle up, head thrown back.
i wonder if its at all like i laugh.
i wonder and i hope it is.

 

Pt. 2
We were talking and she says,
something to the
effect--
"To this day, my mother does not know I smoked pot."
We were talking to our mother and she says,
something to the
effect--
"On my first date with your dad I had a joint in my purse."
She says, "After the date I threw it out the window."
He asked her to marry him after two weeks.
In two months they were married.
In two more months they were pregnant with me.
We were talking and she says,
"I've never been sorry for any of it."
...
My Mother is the most beautiful woman I know.
She is my light, my strength, my shelter,
and my reason for pushing myself further mentally and spiritually.
I am a very blessed daughter.
